Luca G. Manenti in Rijeka for an International Symposium on the History of Freemasonry

28 October 2026
On Friday 6 November 2026, at 6 pm, Luca G. Manenti, historian and Scientific Director of the Manlio Cecovini Association, will be in Rijeka (Fiume), Croatia, to take part in the international symposium “Freemasonry in the Illyrian Provinces – Heritage and History of European Freemasonry”, dedicated to the history of Freemasonry in the Illyrian Provinces and, more broadly, across the Adriatic region.

The symposium, which will take place at Modello Palace, will bring together scholars examining the presence and activities of Freemasonry in the territories of the eastern Adriatic during the Napoleonic era.

Manenti will open the programme with a lecture entitled “The Three Eagles: Adriatic Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite from the Habsburgs to Napoleon and Beyond”, exploring the development of Freemasonry in the Adriatic region under Habsburg rule, during the Napoleonic era and in subsequent periods.

His presentation will be followed by contributions from Matevž Košir, who will examine the history of Freemasonry in Koper (Capodistria) and Ljubljana during the period of the Illyrian Provinces, and Benjamin Novosel, whose lecture will focus on Freemasonry in Rijeka and along the eastern Adriatic coast.

The symposium will provide an opportunity for international academic discussion of a chapter of European history closely intertwined with the political and cultural developments of the eastern Adriatic.
