Luca G. Manenti to speak at the conference “1946: The National League Rises Again”

20 March 2026

Luca G. Manenti, Scientific Director of the Società internazionale di divulgazione Manlio Cecovini per gli studi storici, sociali ed etici, will be among the speakers at the conference “1946: The National League Rises Again. Italy and Freedom in post-war Trieste”, organised by the Lega Nazionale on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of its reconstitution.

The event will take place on Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 5.00 pm in the Sala Maggiore of the Camera di Commercio Venezia Giulia, in Piazza della Borsa 14, Trieste.

Manenti’s talk is scheduled for 5.35 pm and is entitled: “Identity culture and welfare policy. The National League in the second post-war period (1946–1948)”.

In his address, Manenti will reconstruct the political context of post-war Trieste, marked by uncertainty over the city’s future, and will illustrate the proactive role of the Lega Nazionale in bringing together patriotic forces of all orientations—excluding Fascists and Communists—in order to secure Trieste’s return to Italy.

The conference will open with institutional greetings and an address by the President of the Lega Nazionale, Paolo Sardos Albertini. This will be followed, in addition to Manenti’s contribution, by a paper from Stefano Pilotto, focusing on Italy in 1946 as a crucial moment of political and institutional decision-making.

At the conclusion of the proceedings, archival footage relating to three significant moments in Trieste’s history—2 May 1945, 12 June 1945, and 27 March 1946—will be screened. The material, drawn from the archive of Paolo Venier, will be introduced by the historian Roberto Spazzali.

The initiative aims to offer a historical reflection on the role of the Lega Nazionale in the post-war period, highlighting its commitment to promoting the values of “Italy and Freedom” and its contribution to the cultural and civic life of the city of Trieste.

Admission is free, subject to availability of seats.
