Hosted by Luca G. Manenti
"Manlio Cecovini Study Society" promotes a series of lectures scheduled every third Tuesday of the month in Trieste.
The second event - titled
'La guerra ultraterrena. Allucinazioni, spettri, profezie nel primo conflitto mondiale' (The Otherworldly War: Hallucinations, Specters, and Prophecies in the First World War) - is scheduled for Tuesday,
January 23, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Antico Caffè San Marco. The event will feature historian Luca G. Manenti, the scientific director of the Association, delving into the theme of Spiritualism, a doctrine that originated in the United States.
During and immediately after the First World War, Spiritualism experienced a season of great popularity throughout the Western world. As a tile in the cultural mosaic characterized by the overwhelming advance of the irrational, opposed by the Church and ridiculed by the standard-bearers of positivism, Spiritualism garnered widespread consensus across classes, genders, and states, presenting itself as a remedy for the pain of the families of slain soldiers. The presentation reconstructs the resurgence of mediumistic practices in Europe in the aftermath of the Great War, concurrently addressing the themes of the occult, magic, and frontier disciplines.
