We realised too late that ‘La Carta del Carnaro’ (The Charter of Carnaro), the Constitution of the Free State of Fiume, lies exactly in the middle of our history, between the Constitution of the Roman Republic of 1849 and the Constitution of the Italian Republic of 1948. ‘La Carta del Carnaro’ (The Charter of Carnaro) is not a timid dot in the middle of two great events. It is a bridge that holds two extremes of Italian history together in a wonderful balance, a bridge that carried the ideas of Giuseppe Mazzini and Aurelio Saffi through to Piero Calamandrei.
‘La Carta del Carnaro’ (The Charter of Carnaro), written and conceived by Alceste De Ambris, to which D'annunzio added poetry, was presented at the La Fenice theatre in Fiume in August 1920 by De Ambris himself. It represented a true revolution for those years.
Over and above the importance of D'Annunzio, who was the alchemist of the Charter, we would like to remember that we owe a debt to Alceste De Ambris that we must in some way fill. We therefore feel it is essential to re-propose that futuristic.
