Held by Alessandro Carrieri
The sixteenth and final event before the summer break in the lecture series promoted by the cultural association “Manlio Cecovini Study Society” will take place on Tuesday, 17 June 2025 at 6.00 pm at the Antico Caffè San Marco in Trieste.
The event, led by Alessandro Carrieri, will recall the Nazi-Fascist persecution in the field of music, exploring the role of music as a form of resistance within concentration camps, with a particular focus on the Theresienstadt ghetto-camp and the orchestras of Auschwitz.
Despite an extensive bibliography on the impact of the 1938 racial laws on Italian cultural life, the study of Fascist anti-Jewish persecution in the musical world remains an area that has yet to be systematically explored. The lecture will offer an overview of ongoing research conducted by Carrieri in collaboration with Annalisa Capristo of the Centro Studi Americani in Rome, in partnership with the Carlo and Vera Wagner Museum of the Jewish Community of Trieste. The aim is to reconstruct the personal and professional stories of musicians, conductors, singers, choristers, music critics, and teachers who were victims of persecution.
