Casanova and Freemasonry, dialogue with Antonio Trampus

15 February 2024
Giacomo Casanova and freemasonry: an irregular relationship as much as the intricate interweaving of customs, loves, and social life that distinguished the Venetian adventurer. Despite the many facets of his life, the proximity to masonry and the frequentation of lodges remained, however, one of the defining traits of Casanova's entire life.

These themes will be at the center of the free admission conference scheduled for Tuesday, February 20 at 6 pm at the Ancient Caffè San Marco in Trieste; a reflection during which the main stages of Casanova's latomistic experience will be retraced, from initiation in Lyon in 1750 to the trial with imprisonment in the Piombi, from visits to Dutch lodges to the last Masonic experiences in Bohemia in the 1780s.

Speaking will be Professor Antonio Trampus, full professor of Modern History at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, with moderation by historian Luca G. Manenti, scientific director of the cultural association "Manlio Cecovini Study Society" The conference program includes the welcome and opening of the session by Dr. Giuseppe Antonione, president of the "Manlio Cecovini Study Society"; followed by the report by Antonio Trampus moderated by Luca G. Manenti and a moment of dialogue with the audience.

"Casanova and Freemasonry" is the third event of the conference series promoted by the "Manlio Cecovini Study Society" which involves established scholars of national and international caliber.

The upcoming events, always scheduled at Caffè San Marco, will be on March 19, when Andrea Dessardo will focus on Maria Montessori and her relationships with theosophy, and on April 16 with Barbara Mazza Boccazzi, who will talk about Masonic backgrounds and esoteric aspects of the Venetian garden in the Napoleonic era.
