Luca G. Manenti Speaker at the University of Trieste Conference

31 October 2025
Luca G. Manenti, Scientific Director of the "Manlio Cecovini Study Society”, will be a speaker at the conference “Armenians and Others: History and Culture of a Diaspora”, organised by the University of Trieste – Department of Humanities.

The event will take place on 10 and 11 November in the “Arduino Agnelli” Hall, Androna Campo Marzio 10, Trieste.

Manenti’s lecture is scheduled for the morning of Monday, 10 November, and will be entitled:
“Of the Armenian Nation: Gregorio Ananian in Trieste between Politics, Medicine and Philanthropy.”

In his presentation, Manenti will offer a biographical overview of Gregorio Ananian, a prominent figure within the nineteenth-century Armenian community of Trieste. Born into a wealthy family in Constantinople, Ananian studied medicine in Padua and Paris before practising at the court of Sultan Selim III. Forced into exile by court intrigues, he settled in Trieste in 1815, where he continued his medical career, distinguishing himself also for his philanthropic commitment and his political activity as a member of the municipal council.

As Manenti will illustrate, Ananian’s life story is doubly exemplary: on the one hand, it reflects the enterprise and adaptability of the Armenians, able to integrate and often excel within their host societies; on the other, it embodies Trieste’s vocation as an open and inclusive city—a crossroads of experiences, talents and opportunities that have enriched both its own history and that of the Empire.
