Luca G. Manenti, Scientific Director of the Manlio Cecovini Study Society, will speak at the event “Multicultural City; ‘Most Italian City’; City of Science: Trieste between the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries”, part of the public seminar series “Ports, Populations, Societies in a Border Area”, organised by the Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste.
The event will take place on Wednesday 1 April 2026 at 4:30 pm at the Civico Museo Sartorio, in the Costantinides Hall, in Trieste.
The meeting forms part of a wider travelling project involving several cities in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region – including Trieste, Gorizia, Grado and Monfalcone – aimed at exploring, also from a public engagement perspective, themes such as migration, identity and social transformations in a border area.
In his paper, Manenti will reconstruct the political identity of Trieste between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, examining the personal networks and power dynamics developed by members of the liberal-national party, who, through irredentist associations and Masonic lodges, dominated municipal elections in the city for over four decades.
Alongside Manenti, Tullia Catalan and Elisabetta Vezzosi will also speak, while the discussion will be chaired by Alessandro Carrieri.
The initiative, open to the public, aims to foster dialogue between scholars and the wider community on key issues in the history of the Julian area, adopting an interdisciplinary perspective attentive to the long-term dynamics that have shaped the city’s identity.
