Luigi Einaudi: An Event to Celebrate His Legacy and Thought

04 December 2024
On Friday, 6 December, the University of Trieste, the Einaudi Foundation and the Cultural Association ‘Società Internazionale di divulgazione Manlio Cecovini per gli studi storici sociali ed etici’ (Manlio Cecovini Study Society) organised a morning event on the figure of Luigi Einaudi in the Conference Room of the Department of Economics, Business, Mathematics and Statistics ‘Bruno de Finetti’ to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the first President elected by Parliament and the 70th anniversary of the honorary degree awarded to him by the University of Trieste.

During the conference, the documentary ‘The President of the Miracle’, directed by Pupi Avati and produced by the Luigi Einaudi Foundation, was screened.

The film traces the biography of the President of the miracle and, through archive material, fragments of interviews and statements, tries to revive Luigi Einaudi's thinking: rigour in public finance, competition, strict separation between politics and economics. Principles at the origin of the economic boom that created wealth for that generation and the following ones.

The screening was followed by a round table discussion on the contribution, legacy and topicality of Einaudian thought, moderated by Fabrizio Brancoli, Deputy Director of the Nem Group with responsibility for the Trieste daily Il Piccolo.

Speakers at the round table were Andrea Cangini, Secretary General of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation, Emma Galli, Director of the Scientific Committee of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation and Lecturer in Financial Science at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’, Francesco Magris, Lecturer in Economic Policy at the University of Trieste and Giacinto Micucci, Deputy Director of the Trieste branch of the Bank of Italy.
