Manlio Cecovini Study Society Hosts the Einaudi Foundation at Its Trieste Headquarters

23 October 2025

A new and prestigious chapter opens for the Manlio Cecovini International Society for the Dissemination of Knowledge in Historical, Social and Ethical Studies, which is now hosting the Luigi Einaudi Foundation at its premises in Viale Miramare 23, Trieste. The inauguration, held on the 150th anniversary of Luigi Einaudi’s birth, marked a moment of great cultural significance for Trieste and a recognition of the Cecovini Society, which now becomes a point of reference for the Einaudi Foundation’s activities in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

During the ceremony, Matteo Devescovi, President of the Cecovini Society, recalled the origins of the institution, founded two years after Manlio Cecovini’s passing by Luigi Milazzi, Alessandro Giadrossi, Giuseppe Antonione and Michele Valente, with the aim of deepening and promoting the thought and work of one of the most distinguished figures in Trieste’s cultural and civic life.
Manlio Cecovini,” Devescovi remarked, “was a man of vast culture, a leading figure in the city’s political and intellectual life, a charismatic leader and a convinced European. His personality, which I would describe as Einaudian, was marked by profound rationality and a constant pursuit of dialogue. He defended the Italian identity of Trieste in its most difficult moments, yet he was also among the first to recognise the importance of dialogue and mutual respect among the city’s diverse communities.”

It was precisely this spirit of openness, dialogue, and culture as a bridge between peoples and ideas that made the meeting between the Piedmontese and Julian associations a natural one. Andrea Cangini, Secretary General of the Einaudi Foundation, stated:
“We are in Trieste because here we feel at home. Trieste is a crossroads of cultures, religions and ethnicities that have coexisted harmoniously and this is the truest expression of liberal thought. It is a profoundly Italian city by history, yet also deeply European, looking towards Austria and the great economists of the Austrian liberal school. Here, the encounter between different traditions has always generated culture and progress, and the Einaudi Foundation both recognises and values this.”

Cangini also announced that the new Trieste office will be led by Andrea Fassini and Andrea Bitetto, and that a School of Liberalism and a new international initiative involving the Balkan countries will soon be launched, with the aim of strengthening Trieste’s role as a meeting place and hub for European dialogue.

The inauguration also featured Enrico Samer, member of the Einaudi Foundation’s Board and Vice-President of the Manlio Cecovini International Society, who emphasised that the synergy between the two associations represents an extraordinary opportunity to bring young people closer to the world of culture and knowledge.

The hospitality offered by the Cecovini Society to the Einaudi Foundation confirms Trieste’s vocation as a centre of study, reflection and cultural dissemination – open to dialogue and civil growth. It is a place where the memory of Manlio Cecovini, a man of thought and action, jurist, politician, writer and intellectual – continues to inspire new generations in the spirit of freedom, reason and mutual respect.
