The presentation of the volumes “Si soffre ma si tace. Luigi Frausin, Natale Kolarič: communists and partisans” (Irsrec FVG, 2020) by Manenti, and “Dictionary of the Resistance on the Upper Adriatic Border 1941–1945” (Irsrec, 2022), took place yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 16 April, at the Ubik bookshop in the Galleria Tergesteo, Piazza Borsa.
The event, moderated by Gabriele Mastrolillo, Scientific Director of Irsrec FVG, featured contributions from Luca G. Manenti, Scientific Director of the Manlio Cecovini International Dissemination Society, and Patrick Karlsen, Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Trieste.
The Dictionary of the Resistance is an important tool for summarising and disseminating knowledge on the history of the resistance movement in the Upper Adriatic border area between 1941 and 1945. Aimed at both specialist and general audiences, the dictionary is divided into an introductory section that outlines the historical context, and a second part made up of concise yet substantial entries on events, locations, and key figures of the resistance movement.
The work conveys the complexity of a resistance that developed in a borderland marked by multiple identities and tensions, where the struggle against Nazi-fascism was closely intertwined with ethnic, political, and social issues. Manenti and Karlsen are the authors of the dual biography of Frausin and Kolarič—emblematic figures of anti-fascism in Trieste—who shared a common path of resistance and an internationalist vision.
Those in attendance appreciated the combination of academic rigour and a commitment to accessibility, as well as the value of the research within contemporary historiography, particularly in relation to the memory of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the entire eastern border region.
