“The War Within”: Fabio Todero presents his new book in Trieste on the Great War and the Adriatic frontier

12 May 2026

On Wednesday 27 May at 6.00 pm, the headquarters of the "Manlio Cecovini Study Society”, located at 23 Viale Miramare in Trieste, will host the presentation of The War Within. From the Trenches of the Karst to Fiume by Fabio Todero, published by Battello Stampatore in 2026.

The event, open to the public free of charge, will feature a conversation between the author Fabio Todero and Luca G. Manenti, Scientific Director of the Association, and will offer the audience an opportunity to explore one of the most dramatic and decisive turning points in contemporary European history: the Great War and its political, social and cultural consequences for the Adriatic region and twentieth-century Europe.

Beginning with the events of the Karst front and the city of Fiume, the volume reconstructs the profound impact of the conflict on both collective and individual destinies, highlighting how the First World War marked the rupture that brought the Belle Époque to an end and ushered in the long season of wars, violence and totalitarian regimes that characterised the twentieth century.

Fabio Todero, a native of Trieste, holds a PhD in Italian Studies and is a researcher at the Regional Institute for the History of the Resistance and Contemporary History in Friuli Venezia Giulia. For many years he has focused on the history of the Great War, the memory of the conflict and the Adriatic frontier. Organiser of conferences and curator of exhibitions and scientific projects, he is also Scientific Director of the online journal Frontiera Adriatica. His publications include Pages of the Great War. Writers in Grey-Green Uniform (Mursia, 1999), Dying for the Fatherland. Volunteers from the Austrian Littoral in the Great War (Gaspari, 2005), Unredeemed Land, Unknown Land. The Call to Arms on Italy’s Eastern Border (Laterza, 2023) and The Frontier Game. A History of Adriatic Irredentism (Laterza, 2025).

The presentation forms part of the programme of cultural activities promoted by the Cecovini Association to foster the appreciation of the history, memory and identity of the Adriatic area, offering an opportunity for discussion and reflection open to the wider public.
